Learning to relish the moments

I think God is trying to teach me how to relish the moments of my life. Today, I am overwhelmed by the goodness of God!

Psalm 37:4 ESV says,

Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

If I’m being honest, I don’t always  delight in the Lord. Last week, I wrote about A new book and a new beginning  One week later, I’m am overjoyed by the success of this book. But it is the love of God and other people that overwhelms me. It’s incredible and I am grateful.

On Saturday, we hit publish on my first book, The Me Disease. I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve never written a book and certainly never published one. But it was exciting to hold that proof copy in my hand and push the “Publish” button on Amazon.

When Sunday morning rolled around, I hopped out of bed, swirling with emotion. Joyful, I jumped on Facebook and went to work, promoting, sharing, some would say hustling. Momentum seemed to be growing. Before I knew it, it was 11 o’clock. I missed my shower and church. Perturbed at myself, I thought, “Great is thy faithfulness Oh Lord. Great is yours, but not mine.”

Lamentations says,

Certainly the faithful love of the Lord hasn’t ended;[a] certainly God’s compassion isn’t through!
23 They are renewed every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Praise the Lord, God’s love for me is not dependent on my love for God. Because this is what happens. I get caught up in myself and miss the moments. I think God is trying to teach me how to relish these moments. I have to be intentional, pause and notice.

My husband, who was aware, quickly gathered us up for our own time of praise and worship in our living room. The day changed right before our eyes. It was as if by  acknowledging God, God acknowledged us. God then set all things right, in that moment. We had church in our pajamas, listing our prayers and concerns, followed by singing and a sermon. I didn’t preach. We listened to TV preacher, Creflo Dollar. Even his message spoke to our hearts as he talked about trusting God.

Proverbs says,  ” Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall [b]direct your paths.”

God is definitely directing our path. My husband wrote a blog a few weeks ago recognizing God at work in his life since the beginning of his life. I know everything seems like peaches and cream for us right now. We just released a book and it’s doing pretty good. Things seem great. But it won’t always be this way. Why shouldn’t I pause and relish these moments. Jesus even tells us, “I’ve said these things to you so that you will have peace in me. In this world you will have trouble. But be encouraged! I have overcome the world.”

We all have trouble for time to time. But we also have joy. I think God intends for us to slow down and enjoy these moments. Did you know the definition of ‘enjoy’ is;“To take delight in?” Whoa! God’s word says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and I will give you the desires of your heart.” The definition of delight is ‘to take great pleasure in.” When was the last time I took great pleasure in anything, especially the Lord? I’m feeling a little convicted right now. I’ve had one of the most exciting weeks of my life and I couldn’t even make it to church on Sunday.

I believe God takes great pleasure in me regardless of how I respond. I think He takes great pleasure in you too. I was watching my son laughing his head off at a movie the other night. I experienced great pleasure from his joy. Have you ever felt that twinge of delight in someone else’s happiness? I think that is a small piece of what God feels for us. God gave us this life. It is a gift and meant to be enjoyed. I’ve got to learn to pause and relish the moments.

Pray with me: God forgive us for not delighting in you or even in our lives at times. Forgive us for rushing around missing some of the greatest gifts you have given us. Teach us how to enjoy the moments. Show us how to delight in YOU. Thank you that you love us so much, you were willing to give us everything, including your son who died on the cross for us all! In Jesus name, Amen. -M
