This morning, as I stepped outside around 5:45 a.m., I was met by the most beautiful night sky. The crescent moon shone so bright, while the stars twinkled all around it. It was a reminder, telling me to be a light in this world. All I could do was praise God.
“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise…”
Psalm 96:1-11 reads,
Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
6 Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and glory are in his sanctuary….
9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;
tremble before him, all the earth….
11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
When I stepped out of my house this morning, I stepped into the heavens rejoicing. The moon was doing exactly what the moon does. The stars were sharing their little lights without being told to do so.
Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:14, “We are the light of the world.” God created us this way and Jesus confirmed it by His words.
I was surprised when I stepped out this morning, to be met by that bright moon against the dark night sky. But the moon doesn’t forget what it was created to do. However, sometimes I do. But it doesn’t matter if I forget. The world sees my light even when I don’t. My light is still there, it’s still shining. And, so is yours.
Drawing closer to God makes our light shine that much brighter. Caring for others intensifies our light. When you think about it, helping comes natural to us. It feels good because we are being what God created us to be.
When God said, “Let there be light” have you ever thought God was talking to us?
While visiting with an elderly gentleman the other day, he handed me a gift. It was a battery powered camp light. Quizzically, I said, “thank you?” He replied, “be a light.”
He sees my light even when I don’t. He understands the importance of being a light and sharing our light with the world! That is what God created us to be; the light of the world!
So the next time you are feeling a little disheartened by what’s going on in the world, remember this; we can be light because God created us to be light. We can share that light and make a difference in someone else’s life.
Be a light. Share your light and make a difference. Be who God created you to be.
Let us pray;
God of all that is, remind us who You created us to be. Help us to be a light in the world. Show us ways to make our light shine brighter, all for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
