Do you believe in miracles?

Do you believe in miracles? I think we’ve had this conversation before. But do you?

Do you believe that when Jesus walked this earth, He performed miracles?

The Gospel of Luke tells us,

 “He (Jesus) went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
    to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
    and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

What a miracle!

The prophets, hundreds of years before, said One was coming. On this day, the One stood before them. Jesus, The Christ, read the words and proclaimed their fulfillment.

He was already performing those miracles in their midst. Seeing really is believing. If you’ve ever witnessed a miracle, your faith is made stronger right then and there.

The definition of miracle is;

  1. an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs, the healing miracles described in the Gospels
  2. an extremely outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment.
  3. a divinely natural phenomenon experienced humanly as the fulfillment of spiritual law

The divine manifesting in human affairs. In other words, God showing up for us. This describes Immanuel, “God with us.”

Anytime we encounter God in our everyday lives, we experience a miracle. Jesus showed up and gave us a physical form to touch and see. And, God is still showing up for us today.  Often, it is Christ’s Spirit within us, making us a miracle for someone else. How miraculous is that?

Look around. How many miracles can you count? The miracle is we are here. We can breathe. God loves us so much that He sent us His Son to usher in the biggest miracle ever.

Here’s the real miracle…

Ephesians 3:14-21 reads;

“For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

All the fullness of God. That’s a miracle!

There are miracles all around us. A blade of grass, a mighty oak, a school of dolphins swimming in the shallows of an inlet.

My son, he’s a miracle. To be able to conceive and carry life within me. To physically birth him and then watch that tiny little baby grow. That is an all out miracle!

Miracles upon miracles.  

Christ’s Spirit dwells in our inner being, thus giving us Jesus’ power within us. “I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me.” All things! We are empowered to do all the things Jesus did.

In fact, Jesus tells us in John 14:12; “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these…,”

Greater things! This is a miracle.

So the question is not, “Do you believe in miracles?” The question becomes, “Are you doing those greater things?”

Let us pray:

God of all miracles, we praise you! We praise you for both big and small things. And because you are the God of goodness and mercy, we praise you even more! Please help us to see all the miracles and to begin doing those greater things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
