“Don’t forget to water the flowers.” That’s what I said, as I listed all the other things I needed my husband to do while I was away at a spiritual retreat for the weekend. I had been so busy getting ready to go, I hadn’t taken the time to water them myself. Actually, I had forgotten to do many things that I usually do every day. Things like praying and reading my Bible. I guess, like watering the flowers, I just didn’t take the time.
When I returned four days later, I stepped out onto my back patio, only to find my poor little pitiful flowers, all withered and shriveled. They were dying of thirst. Instinctively, I knew that’s exactly how I must have looked heading into that four day retreat. Spiritually, I was withering up and dying of thirst too.
In order to live, there are a few things we have to have. These are critical to our well being. One is water and the other is air or breath. The Bible talks a lot about both.
This week, I want to look at water.
Here are a just a few scriptures.
- Psalm 63:1 CEB says, “God! My God! It’s you—
I search for you!
My whole being[a] thirsts for you!
My body desires you
in a dry and tired land,
no water anywhere.” - Isaiah 44:3 NIV says; “For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring,
and my blessing on your descendants. - Isaiah 58:11 AMP says; “And the Lord will continually guide you,
And satisfy your soul in scorched and dry places,
And give strength to your bones;
And you will be like a watered garden,
And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.”
Are you dry and thirsty? When was the last time your soul was satisfied? Isaiah says the Lord will continually guide you and your soul will be satisfied. So, if your soul is not satisfied, is it possible that you may not be allowing the Lord to guide you? Just like those poor little flowers have to have water, our souls need it too. When was the last time you watered your soul?
Here’s how to water your soul.
Spend time with Jesus.
It seems so easy, yet often we forget.
- John 4:10 ESV, Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
- John 6:35 NIV; Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
- John 7:38 ESV; Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.
Jesus is our spiritual water. He is our life. Just like those flowers need water every day, so does our soul. “If you are thirsty, if you are weak, all you have to do to come… and you will thirst no more.” (Side note – you can’t expect someone else to water your flowers for you. This is something you have to do for yourself.)
Make this song your prayer. (If you can’t see the YouTube, open this message in your browser or from my website.)
