Even Greater Things

Have you ever thought about what Jesus meant when He said, we will do “even greater things” than He did? How could we do greater things? Today, we are going to discover what Jesus meant and how it is even possible.

Last week, we celebrated the arrival of the Holy Spirit. As we reflect on Acts Chapter 2, we see words like “wind” and “fire.” Although Jesus told them the Holy Spirit, our Counselor, was coming, they had no idea what to expect.

Acts 2:2-4 reads, “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

This is what Jesus predicted, before He was even crucified. He sat with His disciples, teaching them His ways and telling them what was to come. Everything He said was true and we have the scriptures to back it up.

Let’s look at John 14.

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

Jesus says, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Let’s skip to verse 12.

The Answered Prayer

12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises Another Helper

15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

Indwelling of the Father and the Son

19 “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and [f]manifest Myself to him.”

The Holy Spirit, Counselor, Comforter, Helper, Spirit of Truth, equips us to do the work of Christ here on earth. It is this indwelling of Christ’s spirit that enables us to do the work God has prepared us to do. Without the spirit living and breathing within us, we are powerless.

But with it, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us! That’s our power! We look for major miracles, but sometimes the miracle comes in a kind word, a gentle smile or simply holding the door for someone. God can do all things, big and small.

Sometimes, I think we want to hang on to Jesus. The disciples did. But Jesus knew He had to go in order to make room for the spirit that would soon be living within us. Christ living within us is the Holy Spirit!

Receiving this Holy Spirit is something greater! Once received, that Spirit enables us to do all the things Jesus did. So the question becomes, are you doing those greater things?

Let us pray;

Come, Holy Spirit, come. We believe. Heal our unbelief. Equip us to do even greater things, for our good and your glory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
