Do you believe in miracles? I think it’s a relevant question. Do you?
I do. I have experienced more miracles than I can count. They range in size and significance from finding my keys to meeting an angel when my mom had a horrific car accident years ago. Miracles are real and today I want us to talk about them. I actually want you to open up to the possibility of miracles. Because if you will, they have the power to change your life.
Watch out, here come the miracles!
The word ‘miracle’ or ‘miraculous’ is used more than 50 times in my NIV Bible. Most of the miracles we read about are performed by Jesus.
The definition of miracle is; “an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs.” That is God showing up and working things out on our behalf. How many times has God worked something out for you? That is a miracle!
As we have read story after story of miraculous events leading up to Jesus’ death and after, we have established all of his appearances were so we might believe. Maybe that is the point of miracles as well?
The Hebrew definition of the word ‘miracle’ is; “a symbol of victory held high for all to see.” Looking back when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead in John 11, He says, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” Every miracle Jesus performs is a symbol of victory held high for all to see. It is the ultimate power of God at work in our everyday lives. This is the glory of God.
So, have you ever experienced a miracle?
In order to experience these ‘miracles,’ let’s start wondering about the ironic things happening all around us.
Several weeks ago, I wrote a blog entitled, What comes after Easter? In it, I said, “Wonder is our gateway to God.” Wonder opens us up to possibilities and lets us in on what God is doing in our lives. If we are brave enough to wonder, we just might start seeing these miracles.
As you begin to wonder about miracles, ask questions and notice.
Wonder might look like this;
- “Isn’t it odd I turned to the perfect scripture this morning? I wonder if that was God?”
- Today, my cat climbed into my lap, which she seldom ever does, and gave me kitty kisses when I felt sad. Did God do that for me?
- Amazingly, I found my misplaced keys right after I prayed for God to help me find them. Was that God?
- When I got in my car, after a very stressful day at work, I couldn’t believe my favorite song was playing on the radio which lightened my mood. Thank you God!
“I wonder…”
Asking the question, “I wonder…” can help you start noticing God at work in your life. These examples may seem small and insignificant, but once you begin noticing miracles in the small things, you will be blown away at how much God is doing for you each and every day.
Jesus, Himself, tells us, “apart from God we can do nothing.” “But with God, all things are possible.”
In the coming weeks, I want us to dive deeper into the miracles Jesus performed and how they relate to the miracles in our own lives. Let’s cultivate a miracle mindset, recognizing God is intervening for us all the time. Every miracle is a testimony of the goodness of God.
My prayer is that we not only get comfortable with miracles, we come to expect them. There are miracles happening all around us, all the time. So much so, that at the end of John’s gospel, we are told, “There are many other things which Jesus did, which if they were recorded one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.”
So watch out! Here come the miracles!
Let us pray; God of miracles, forgive us when we refuse to see your hand at work. Thank you for sending your Son to show us what miracles look like. Grant us the wisdom to see and embrace the miracles happening all around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
