How we pray (part 5)

If you have been following along the last few weeks, you know we have been learning how we pray. As we break down the Lord’s Prayer, taught to us by Jesus himself, we see there are two distinct sections. The first part focuses on God. The second is about us. Today, we will finish up the “God” part with “Your Will be done.”

If you want to catch up, here are the links;

Matthew 6:9-10 reads:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
    on earth as it is in heaven.

This gives us our formula. We should put God first in everything we do. Seek God’s Kingdom and His will. As we linger over the words, there is significance, not just in the prayer but in ourselves.

“Your Will Be Done”

Typically, “your will be done,” always follows “your kingdom come.” It rolls right off our tongues before we even realize or understand what we are saying. But separating the two phrases, sheds light on what Jesus is revealing to us.

The Message reads,Set the world right;
Do what’s best—
    as above, so below.”

Only God can set the world right. But as we learned last week, we get the opportunity to participate bringing the Kingdom of God here to earth. Somehow us participating with God helps set the world right.

When we pray, “your will be done,” we are trusting God to do what is best for us and the world around us.

My study note says, “your kingdom come” not in the sense of to come into existence– after all, it is already here–but to come more and more completely until its full and final consummation.” It goes on to say, “It is the establishment of God’s will in the hearts and lives of his people…”

What is God’s Will?

When God’s will is established in our hearts, we help bring God’s kingdom here on earth.

How can we establish God’s will in our hearts? How can we know the Will of God?

The Bible tells us God reveals His will to us.

Paul says in Romans 12,

From the Amplified version;

“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].”

  1. So, we do not need to conform to this world we live in but rather be transformed by Christ living in us.
  2. We need to mature spiritually by renewing our mind.
  3. We renew our mind by focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes.
  4. We focus on godly values by reading our Bibles and spending time in prayer with God.
  5. Then, God’s Will will not only be seen through us but will also be seen by those around us.
  6. Thus, bringing the Kingdom of God here!

This is how we pray!

Did you know that you play such a valuable role in the Kingdom of God?

Put God first in everything you do. Seek Him in all things. Trust that God knows what is best for us and those around us. Be an instrument of God’s love to the world.

Let us pray,

Good and gracious God, thank you that You do know what is best. Thank you that You never give up on us. Set the world right. Set our hearts right so that we may share your love with the whole world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

P.S. Leave me a comment below and let me know how you plan to share God’s love today. Forward this message to a friend who may not know how valuable they are to God. Share on Facebook and tag me in it. Until next time, continue to pray, ‘Your kingdom come God, Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” -M
