Have you ever needed help? Maybe you are experiencing one of those storms of life we talked about last week. Whatever your circumstance, when you hear the words, “Help is on the way,” you know everything is going to be okay. But there is a miracle in that help and we don’t have to wait on it.
Years ago, while my husband was at work, my lower back went out. I remember laying in the bed, unable to physically move. As I yelled out in excruciating pain, my 8 year old son did the only thing he knew to do. He picked up the phone and dialed 911. After a brief conversation, he looked at me and said, “Mom, it’s going to be okay, help is on the way.” Immediately, a sense of relief flooded my entire body.
In Luke 24:49, Jesus says, “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Jesus is telling them, “Help is on the way.” Unfortunately, I don’t think they realized what help Jesus was sending and how much they needed it.
But, it is not until Pentecost that we see the fulfillment of that promise.
Acts 2:1-4 reads:
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
Help has arrived!
The Holy Spirit descended on them so fast, they could not even understand what was happening. Therefore, Peter had to explain it. Quoting the prophet Joel, he said, in Acts 2:17-21;
“‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
“I will pour out my Spirit.”
Peter goes on to say in verse 33, “Exalted to the right hand of God, Jesus has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.”
We should all feel a sense of relief in this promised Holy Spirit. This manifested miracle showing the power of God Almighty came and rested upon them and is still on us today. Help is not only on the way, help is here! Help has arrived! This gift of the Holy Spirit is a promise for you, me, our children and their children. And even their children. With great excitement, we should embrace this miracle, knowing we can do all the things Jesus did!
In the coming weeks, let’s look at the miracles that manifest through the power of the Holy Spirit. Let’s look at the miracles Jesus did through that power and see if we can’t participate in those same miracles today. Let’s embrace this gift as the miracle that it is. Today, we walk in that power. Help is not only on the way, help is here!
Let us pray; Father God, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to equip us to do all the things you have called us to do. May your spirit rest on us like tongues of fire so that we may do your will in all things. In Jesus name, Amen. -M
