Who can heal our so little faith? Jesus!
Who can make the blind man see? Jesus!
Who can set the captives free? Jesus!
Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!
My mother taught years ago, if I was in trouble, scared or just needed help, to call on the name of Jesus. There is power in that name and just by uttering the words, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,” I was calling for help. It is a prayer in itself. I have used it countless times, from standing in front a crowd moments before I am about to speak, to waiting for the ambulance to arrive in a crisis situation. God has never let me down.
God never let Jesus down either. Although, I am sure those young disciples felt pretty let down the day they could not heal the boy of the unclean spirit. But they had forgotten were their power comes from. Unfortunately, I often forget as well.
If you remember, we’ve been following the story of Jesus healing the demon-possessed boy. Last week, we discovered four different types of faith within the passage from Mark 9:14-28. However, it is the faith of Jesus that heals the boy. That’s the kind of faith I want!
But where did Jesus get his faith from, a faith so full of power and authority even the demons cower to it? Today, we are going find out where this kind of faith comes from and how we can get it too.
Faith full of power!
In Mark 9:29, Jesus gives us the answer to a faith full of power. “This one can only come out by prayer.”
Prayer. It is that simple!
Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.“
James 5:16 says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
Matthew 21:22 says, “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” (Those are Jesus’ words.)
And Romans 12:12 says, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
Faithful in prayer makes our faith full of power!
As I read through this Mark 9 passage again, I notice my study note for verse 29, which reads, “The disciples apparently had taken for granted the power given to them or had come to believe that it was inherent in them. Lack of prayer indicated they had forgotten that their power over the demonic spirits came from Jesus.” They had forgotten where their power comes from.
Lack of prayer equals lack of power.
Another commentary said this, “Prayerlessness results in powerlessness.” Do you feel powerless over certain situations in your life? Have you prayed about it?
Prayer is the cord that connects us with God. God is our power source. Prayer is the connector.
Steve Harvey says, “Prayer changes things! The cool thing about prayer is it is the one thing that’s available to everybody at any given time.”
Jesus knew were his power came from. He did not take it for granted nor did He ever forget to use it. We have much to learn from Jesus. Next week, we will discover where miracles come from. I actually stumbled on to the answer while writing this very blog. In the meantime, let us pray;
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, teach us to prayer. Show us the power of prayer and may we always be as faithful in prayer as You are faithful to us. In your sweet name we pray, Amen. -M
