As Christians, we are called to trust God. But trusting God is hard when things don’t appear to be working out the way we think they should. Today, I want to share some practical tips for trusting God in all areas of your life.
Tip #1: Acknowledge God.
There is an anonymous quote that reads, God is God and I am not. Acknowledging this truth is actually the first step in trusting God. It happens to also be the first step of AA. There is a higher power and I am not it. How many times did Jesus surrender his will to the will of the Father? Trusting God begins with acknowledging God.
Tip #2: Become aware.
Awareness is the key to any new growth opportunities. Pay attention to your feelings. Whenever you feel anxious, look at the situation and what led up to it. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we need to be maturing in our spiritual walk. Becoming aware of your nervousness, will allow you to pause and look for new ways to trust God.
One of my favorite verses is Proverbs 3:5, “Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” This verse helps me focus on God instead of my situation. Moving my worries off of myself and onto God, leaves me feeling lighter and more at peace. God is much more capable of handling my problems than I am.
Tip #3: Focus on God.
Whatever situation you are in, God is still in control. Choosing to focus on God and God’s Word helps distract my mind and restores my peace. Scripture tells me why I can trust God. One of the best ways to focus on God is to pray. If I am praying, then I need to trust God to handle it. Romans 8:28 says, ‘And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him….”
My mother reminds me often that if I am praying, I cannot go wrong. Trust God and let God work out the details. Interestingly enough, the verse before Romans 8:28 says “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us …in accordance with the will of God.”
This comforts me and brings us to our final tip.
Tip #4: Pray and Believe.
When we pray, we need to believe. It is the belief that makes our faith real. Believing increases our trust in God.
The definition of trust is; “assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something, one in which confidence is placed, dependence on something future or contingent : HOPE.”
Do you believe in the character, strength and ability of God? Are you fully dependent on God for your future? Have you put your confidence in Him?
Charles Stanley says, “Trusting God means looking beyond what we can see to what God sees!”
Jeremiah 29:11-14 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.“
God knows the plans He has for us. Even when we cannot see it, God is working those plans out on our behalf. God’s Word reassures us we can trust Him.
The next time you find yourself filled with fear and anxiety, uncertain of what the future holds, try these practical tips designed to help you not only trust God but deepen your relationship with Him.
Let us pray;
Dear Lord, thank you that you are God and we are not. Forgive us for not trusting You with our whole hearts. Help us to lean not on our own understanding. Show us that our future is secure in You alone. In Jesus name, Amen.
