A Brand New Day! What are you going to do with it?

Most days I wake with a verse my mama taught me rolling around in my head. “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!” It’s a wonderful way to embrace a brand new day.

This morning, as I sipped my coffee and peered out my kitchen window, I noticed something different, something new. These big fluffy mushrooms had popped up overnight in the back yard. I smiled as I looked at them, intrigued by their rapid growth rate. I wondered what other new life had sprung forth while I was sleeping. For these mushrooms, it really was a brand new day! I imagined them rejoicing in their very first morning.

Immediately, my mind rushed to a verse in Lamentations about God’s mercies being new every morning. I decided to look it up. Lamentations 3:22-23, King Jame Version  reads, “It is of the Lord‘s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” When I reflect on the mercies of God, it is God’s compassion that never fails. God’s compassion for us is new every morning, brand new just for us. I think creation knows this already. But do I?

The definition of ‘mercy’ is;

  • 1acompassion or forbearance shown especially to an offender or to one subject to one’s power
  • 2aa blessing that is an act of divine favor or compassion
  • ba fortunate circumstance

It was a fortunate circumstance that I happened upon those mushrooms. Like a blessing from God. I like to think of God’s mercy as a blessing of divine favor upon my life. Somehow I was experiencing that favor in the simple act of noticing. As I began to pay attention, there was newness everywhere. My blooms were just barely budding and a baby bumblebee buzzed around them. The birds were all chirping and tweeting. All of creation seemed to be rejoicing in the newness of the day.

There is an old Native American tale that speaks of God creating all of creation over and over again, each and every night. So that when morning comes, we have a brand new day to experience. As if while we sleep, God is creating for us a brand new earth with a brand new sky and a brand new sun. It is, in fact, a brand new day, filled with God’s love and compassion for us.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”  Just like in that old tale of God creating a new day, every day, God does that with us. As soon as we say “YES” to Christ, God makes us new again. Sometimes it is moment by moment, God creating in us a new heart, making us a new creation. There is reason to rejoice and be glad in this day!

Just as God has given us a new day, God has given us a new life. Indeed, we are a new creation. I don’t care if you have to say yes to Jesus a 100 times a day. A hundred times God will make you new again. Because His mercies never fail, they are new every morning. Great is God’s faithfulness!

I hope you feel a little divine favor upon your life today. I would encourage you to embrace this brand new day and your brand new life. God has gifted us with this day and in Christ Jesus, we ourselves are a new creation. We have much to rejoice and be glad about!

Let us pray: God of all creation, Creator of a brand new day, thank you! Thank you for the gift of this day. Thank you for the gift of my life. Teach me how to rejoice and be glad in it! Help me to notice the newness of each day and appreciate all that you have given me. In Jesus Name, Amen. -M
