Advent: Part 2 “Come Lord Jesus, Come”

Here we are in our 2nd week of Advent, and the words, “Come Lord Jesus, Come” continue to echo in my mind. I am torn between the buying and wrapping versus the preparing and waiting. But my heart knows, it is the expectation of Jesus’ birth that gives Christmas any meaning at all.

So I begin searching for the hymn or the prayer of “Come Lord Jesus, Come.” I know I have heard it, prayed it and even sung it. My search leads me to Revelation 22:20, which reads, “Come Lord Jesus.”

Backing up to Revelation 22:12-13, it says, “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

Verse 16  of that same chapter reads,  “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”

Last week in the first part of this Advent blog series, I talked about a beckoning. Jesus is inviting us to come to the manger. Just like later in His life, He invites us to come to the table. It is an open invitation and we are all welcome.

The Catholics use this prayer, “Come Lord Jesus Come” as an invitation of Christ into our lives. And a reminder, He is coming back.

Come Lord Jesus, Come

Charles Wesley even wrote a old, familiar hymn about it, entitled Come Thou Long Expected Jesus. I have sung this song countless times during our Advent season.

Here are the words;

Come, Thou long expected JesusBorn to set Thy people free;From our fears and sins release us,Let us find our rest in Thee.Israel’s strength and consolation,Hope of all the earth Thou art;Dear desire of every nation,Joy of every longing heart.
Born Thy people to deliver,Born a child and yet a King,Born to reign in us forever,Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.By Thine own eternal SpiritRule in all our hearts alone;By Thine all sufficient merit,Raise us to Thy glorious throne.
By Thine all sufficient merit,Raise us to Thy glorious throne

“Born a child and yet a King”

Jesus is the “hope of all the earth.” He is the “joy of every longing heart.” Just as He came to us as a child in a manger so long ago, He now longs to come into our hearts. When we receive Him, He then becomes our King. Christmas is no better time to rekindle your love of Jesus! The invitation is here. Won’t you receive Him today?

Let us pray;

Baby Jesus, come to us during this Advent Season. Show us how to make you King of our lives each and every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
