Becoming Stronger – Part II

Due to an unexpected backache a few weeks ago, I was forced to take a good, long look at myself. Thus began this journey of becoming stronger, not just physically but spiritually. Last week, I reflected on my mother, and how she “never forgot what her eyes had seen.” Looking at her life, I discovered two critical pieces to my spiritual strength; scripture and prayer. She knew her scripture and when things got tough, she never forgot the Word that she planted in her heart. […]

Spiritually Stronger Part I – Lessons learned from my Mama

Two weeks ago, while laid up in the bed with a pulled muscle in my back, I realized that I want to be stronger, both spiritually and physically. I recommended that we do it together, you and I, like exercise with an accountability buddy. So today, as we dive into what it might take to become spiritually stronger, I realize that I have a Mama that already knows. Why not look to her? Fitting, since Mother’s day is right around the corner. I’ve watched my […]

Spiritually strong

Last Monday, as I rounded the corner into my ‘writing room”, I was surprised to find my husband sitting at the computer finishing up his blog on being a good father. If you thought it was good, you weren’t the only one, check out the comments at the very bottom of the post. We had such a positive response to that blog. I want to clue you in on a little secret though, a secret I think that will make his blog that much sweeter. […]

Good Good Father

When Melissa first suggested that I write another blog, this time about being a father, I wasn’t all that interested. I mean, she’s the writer in the family, right? But over the next few days, I began thinking about what it means to be a good father. Thinking about my dad and how great of a father he was, lead me to thinking about all the amazing fathers I know. Then, I thought about God, the ultimate example of a good father. My dad was […]

Am I willing to participate in spite of my fears?

A couple of weeks ago, I spoke at a church in Greensboro, NC. I was a little out of my comfort zone, speaking from the pulpit alongside the minister. The more I focused on my fear, the more nervous I became. I had to ask myself, “Am I willing to participate in the work that God is doing in spite of my fears?.” I pushed my fear aside and stepped forward in obedience knowing that God is always with me. As Christians, we often have […]

To help not to be helped.

I just finished working at the Furniture Market, where thousands of out- of-town guests converge on our lovely city. I was hired as a “helper,” assisting a sales representative with his furniture line in a showroom. In this role, I talk to people, answer questions and place orders. It works out well for me because I love people. I really enjoy helping people. The definition of the word ‘help’ is; to make it easier for (someone) to do something by offering one’s services or resources. […]
