In the Becoming, I am… – The Wrap Up for How to be Spiritually Strong

There is something mysterious that happens in the becoming. As I move through this life, I realize it takes the highs and lows, even the waiting, to transform me into the spiritually strong person I am meant to be. Just as the caterpillar keeps moving toward the cocoon in order to become the beautiful butterfly, I am becoming that which I was meant to be. As I wrap it all up, I am going to share the lessons I have learned that keep moving me forward.

  • On the 1st of May, I began digging in for ways to be spiritually strong. I learned from 1 Timothy 4:7 that I should train myself to be godly and that there are promises in that training. But how do I train myself to be godly? I keep searching.
  • The next week, I shared how I have been learning from my mama all my life. What an amazing example, as I watched her ‘never forget what her eyes had seen”. In her darkest hour, she hung on to the two things that could see her through; prayer and scripture. All those years of praying and studying the scriptures were her way of training. She was cultivating a strong prayer life and hiding those precious words of life in her heart. So I ask myself, do I pray and read the scriptures on a regular basis?
  • As I keep going, I understand that we need each other and we need to be prepared, alert even. Colossians 4:2 AMP says, “Be persistent and devoted to prayer, being alert and focused in your prayer life with an attitude of thanksgiving.” Do I have a prayer or accountability partner? Am I focused on my prayer life? Do I have an attitude of thanksgiving?
  • Each week seemed to built upon the last as I press on. I realize, “It’s okay to not be okay.”  If I can admit that truth to another person, something magical happens. I become real. “There is strength in our relationships and power in our vulnerability.” Who can I go to and be honest enough to acknowledge my truth? What mysteries might I find hidden there?
  • And last week,  as I realize I am waiting to be strong, I am surprised to discover things happen in the waiting. Often I don’t even realize it. But the waiting is necessary if we are to become who we were created to be. So I wonder, what am I waiting on and what strengths could I cultivate in this season of waiting?

Ironic that today, as I wrap this series up, my devotion from Jesus Calling takes me to James 1:2-7. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe…”

The caterpillar instinctively understands this perseverance in an effort to finish the work. He gracefully enters his cocoon and waits patiently while God does the work. In those dark days, he is becoming who he was created to be. We too must move toward our goal of being spiritually strong. We are becoming who God created us to be. In those in between moments, growth happens and strength is developed. We must be intentional in our efforts, paying close attention to our prayer life and even partnering up to hold us accountable. We must search the scriptures and wait if necessary. And at just the right moment, before we even know it, we too have become who we were created to be.

  • I am spiritually strong.
  • I am prayerful.
  • I am enough.
  • I am waiting.
  • I am real.
  • I am a part of something bigger than myself.
  • I am complete.

Let us pray;

 Holy God, thank you for growing and developing us. Thank you for finishing the work so that we can be mature and complete. Equip us to wait when it is time to wait and move forward when it is time to move forward. Help us to become all that YOU created us to be. In Jesus Name, Amen. -M
