It’s been a tough week for me. I feel like I have run out of gas. I’m tired and distracted. My son did go back to school. Maybe I’m just irritable. Whatever the case, I wish someone would flip a switch and turn my energy back on. The problem is, I can’t find the switch.
Coffee doesn’t help. So I drink more coffee. That makes sense. I’m tired so I lay down. But I’m so restless, I have to get back up. I just can’t get settled. Maybe it is just one of those days. Have you ever felt like this?
The other week, we had several nights of thunderstorms. One night, the lightening was so bad that I swore it must have struck inside the house. Part of the power went off. Not all. Just part. After a little investigation, it appeared the lightening had somehow tripped a breaker.
Although everything was reset, the power to our outbuilding did not come back on. Several days later, I ended up calling an electrician. When he arrived, he checked all the obvious things, the circuit breakers, the wires. Nothing made the power to the outbuilding come back on. He traced the wires from the house to the building. They happened to run under my patio. As he talked about having to dig up the wire, I could see my beautiful patio being demolished in my mind. A simple power outage was beginning to get a whole lot worse.
I began to pray.
He kept looking for the problem, as I followed him around from spot to spot. All the while I continued praying in my head, “God, all things are possible with you. Let this be something simple to fix.”
Dropping his head, the electrician admitted he had no idea how to fix the problem. Then, all of a sudden, as if a light bulb went off, he said, “Let me check one more thing.”
I continued to utter my little prayer in my head, “God, let it be simple.”
Quickly, he traced a wire, following it from the breaker box, all the way over to the other side of the house. To our surprise, there was another breaker box no one was aware of. My eyes lit up, as his fingers found the tripped breaker. Flipping the switch, the power was instantly restored to the outbuilding.
Prayer is the way to flip the switch on God’s power.
Something hard for us is simple for God. And prayer is our way to tap into God’s power. So, don’t underestimate what God can do in your life because big things for us are so simple for God.
Job 26:7-14 NLT talks of God’s power. It reads;
God stretches the northern sky over empty space
and hangs the earth on nothing.
8 He wraps the rain in his thick clouds,
and the clouds don’t burst with the weight.
9 He covers the face of the moon,[c]
shrouding it with his clouds.
10 He created the horizon when he separated the waters;
he set the boundary between day and night.
11 The foundations of heaven tremble;
they shudder at his rebuke.
12 By his power the sea grew calm.
By his skill he crushed the great sea monster.[d]
13 His Spirit made the heavens beautiful,
and his power pierced the gliding serpent.
14 These are just the beginning of all that he does,
merely a whisper of his power.
Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?”
In this life, we only catch glimpses of God’s power. Often, we experience it in times of weakness or circumstances that are out of our control. 2 Corinthians 13:4 tells us that God’s power lives within us and is glorified through our weaknesses. Jesus tells us in Matthew 19:26 , “that with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
There is great comfort in knowing that all things are possible with God. So, the next time you find yourself in an impossible situation, don’t forget, this is where God does His best work. These are the places where God’s glory is shown. Prayer is our way of tapping into that power. Therefore, always look to God first, allowing Him to flip the switch, releasing the power you need to overcome. In Jesus’ name, Amen. -M
