In its time

I think about time a lot, actually I struggle with it. Running late is common for me. Maybe because I think I can do just one more thing. For me, there never seems to be enough time. But today, I want us to reflect on it a little differently. Because God has told us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

In last week’s blog, God taught us how we should respond in the seasons of our lives. When things get hard, we can actually choose how we will respond. The week before that, in a blog entitled If there is a Season for everything, we reflected on the verses from Ecclesiastes 3:9-14. But I completely missed a verse. It reads, “ He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

In its time

Have you ever thought about time this way? That it is not ours, it is God’s time and it belongs to God. And He is making all things beautiful in its time. It reminds me of the verse from Isaiah about God making everything new.

As I googled the definition of beautiful, it read, “having qualities of beauty.” I decided to look at the synonyms.

Here are a few;

  • lovely
  • perfect
  • good
  • glorious
  • pleasing
  • delightful
  • pleasant

These words make me think of God. But they also make me think of creation and us!

God created us.

In Genesis 1:26-28 ESV, it says, ”

26 Then God said, “Let us make humanity in our image to resemble us so that they may take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and all the crawling things on earth.”

27 God created humanity in God’s own image,
        in the divine image God created them,
            male and female God created them.

28 And God blessed them.

We are His creation, created in His own image

David writes a lot about God, His creation and majesty, but also time. In Psalm 31:15, he writes, “my times are in your hands, Oh Lord.”

Think about your time here on earth being in God’s hands. He has ordained your time. He has given it to you.

David even asks God to give him wisdom regarding his time. In Psalm 90:12, he writes, “Teach us to number our days, so that we may get a heart of wisdom.”

Maybe that is the key to time. To ask God for wisdom so that might appreciate the time we have.

Wisdom is the key.

Psalm 8:3-5 reads;

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
    and the son of man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
    and crowned him with glory and honor.”

Jesus teaches us about time, when he says in Mark 13:32-33;
But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.”

“…a day is like a thousand years…”

But we should not be afraid. 2 Peter 3:8-9 says,

“But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

This leads us straight back to Ecclesiastes 3:1, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens”

God has and is making everything beautiful in its time. We know we can trust God. No matter what season we are in, God is good and patient with us. And in its time, God is making all things beautiful.

Let us pray;

God of goodness and mercy, thank you for your creation. Thank you that our times are in your hands. Give us wisdom in all things. In Jesus name, Amen.
