I am a fireman’s wife. In fact, my father was a fireman and so was my grandfather. So, I know the power of fire. And I know it only takes a spark to get a fire going. Today, we are going to discover our own spark and how it will help us fulfill our purpose.
For the last two weeks, I have been talking about how we are set apart for a purpose. We all have a purpose and when we choose to participate in it, we are participating in God’s will for our lives. That is powerful!
But our purpose is really about relationship. First, our relationship with God and then our relationship with everyone else. We develop this relationship with God through reading His Word and hearing, trusting and obeying. When we experience God, God transforms us. Our lives are changed forever!
If you have read my blogs long enough, you know. from time to time, I wake up with a song in my head. Typically, the song has a message within it and it wants me to follow it. It is actually pretty cool, because this is how many of my blogs are written. Just following God. This morning was no different. Except this song has been rolling around my head for the last three mornings. The same old familiar song, “It only takes a spark to get a fire going.“
Today, we are going to blow a little fresh air on that little spark and see if we can turn it into an all out fire.
You know I’m a bit of a wordsmith. I love the words behind the word. So I looked up the word ‘spark.’ It took me to the phrase “divine spark.” This is what it said…
“the divine spark is the portion of God that resides within each human being. The purpose of life is to enable the Divine Spark to be released from its captivity in matter and reestablish its connection with, or simply return to, God, who is perceived as being the source of the Divine Light.”
It went on to say,
“All human beings contain God’s holy spark. Each person is special because God can see his holy image in each of us, and we, in turn, can see our image in him. ”
Immediately, it makes me think of Acts Chapter 2 when the Holy Spirit finally arrives. And, I realize this is where we’re about to go. We are about to discover the power of the Holy Spirit working inside our very own lives.
“It only takes a spark…”
Acts 2:1-4 reads,
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit…”
This is the power of the Holy Spirit living within us. This is that ‘portion of God that resides within each human being.” This spark turns our lives into a flame of fire and gives our life purpose.
“It only takes a spark to get a fire going. And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing.”
“That’s how it is with God’s love, once you’ve experienced it, You spread His love to everyone,”
“You want to pass it on.”
Our purpose is to understand God’s divine spark dwellings within us. Embrace it. Experience it. Then, share God’s love with the whole world. One person at a time. It is not drudgery. Because, once you have experienced God’s love for yourself, you want to share it. You can’t help but share it. Funny thing, just like a camp fire on a cool night, others are drawn to that glowing warmth. This is our purpose. Pass it on!
Let us pray,
Holy Spirit, turn our spark into a mighty raging fire. Let us experience you in a brand new way. Then, let us share that love with all those we meet today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
P.S. – remember, it only takes a spark to get a fire going. You could help someone light their fire. Leave me a comment below and tell me how it goes. Forward this message to a friend or share on Facebook. Until next time, may your fire glow brighter with the love of Christ today. -M

Thanks Amy. The fire is growing. Be on the look out for this week’s post. Good to hear from you. -M
We’re doing a Zoom Bible study on your book and Wednesday is the day! Perfect that your readings come on Wednesdays! Last week was the first one and we had a rousing discussion using your questions and prompts at the end of each chapter.
Cheryl, this is exciting to hear. It always encourages me that others are using the book. Please pass along any feedback. And tell the others I said hello. The little community you are creating through the small group will only grow as you continue to develop your relationships through good, honest conversation. Keep me posted. -M
