I have sometimes have amazing experiences in ordinary places. Today, while at the grocery store, I was reminded that our Heavenly Father knows exactly what we need, even before we ask it.
Struggling with a stiff elbow, I cautiously pulled the big bag of dog food off the shelf and onto the bottom of my grocery cart. I marveled at the swiftness and precision in which the bag landed, leaving me only to push the edges of the bag up with my foot. “Good job!” I thought, as I made my way through the rest of aisles. Heading for the check-out counter, with my list completed, I wondered how in the world I was going to get that bag of dog food off the bottom of my cart and into the trunk of my car without straining an already aching arm.
The procrastinator in me began loading the bags leaving the hardest job for later. Before I could reach for the last bag, I heard a man’s voice from behind. “Mam, I don’t mean to offend you and I am certain that you could probably do this yourself, but would you mind if I loaded that bag of dog food for you?” My eyes lit up about as fast as the smile that appeared on my face. Graciously I thanked him, explaining about my arm and how I was concerned about loading that bag. With the kindest expression, he lifted his eyes upward and pointed toward the sky saying, “The Father knows… sometimes before we even ask.” I thanked him again and headed for home. My head felt a little swimmy with the idea of God sending someone to help me in my time of need. Such a simple gesture. He and God made my day. Immediately, I was overwhelmed by the love the Father has for us.
While I put those same groceries away, I could not shake the words the man had spoken to me. The idea, that God knows what we need before we ask it, seemed to have stirred something inside of me. I decided to see what the Bible had to say. Sure enough, it was right there. Matthew 6:8 NIV, ” your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Somehow that verse led me to one of my favorites.
- Psalm 139:1-6 NIV, “You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
That led me to Hebrews 4:13 NLT, “Nothing in all of creation is hidden from God’s sight.” I love when God shows me a scripture and then confirms that word through other passages. God is amazing!
I remember my mama telling me how the eyes of the Lord roam back and forth over the whole earth, searching for those who love Him. I envision God’s tremendous eyes looking out over all the earth. It’s overwhelming. When I looked up the verse, it actually reads, “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” God not only knows what we need before we ask it, He is looking for us in order to strengthen us. He sees us! He knows us! He loves us! How great is that!
So the next time you find yourself in a bit of a bind, rest assured that God already knows.
Let us pray: Father God, thank you that you know what we need before we ask. Thank you that you search for us, looking to strengthen us. Thank you that you are too wonderful for us to even fathom. We pray today that we can rest in the assurance that you are God and you are more than enough. In Jesus Name, Amen. -M
