Waiting on God and how to do it

waitingWaiting is one of the most difficult things to do.  Yet, I find myself always waiting on something.

When God spoke to me years ago and said, “Sell the house,” we began waiting for the right buyer. After that, God said, “sell the business and write a book,” and we waited. Now, just a few years later, I am still waiting.

Do you feel like you are always waiting?

Here is what I discovered; there is a proper way to wait that pleases to the Lord. Then, there is the way I wait; kicking, pouting, pushing and prodding. There is nothing pretty about it.

I am impatient and always have been. But out of the deepest recesses of my soul, I hear God saying, “how patient am I with you?”  God is patiently teaching me to wait.

A few years ago, I attended a spiritual renewal conference, where I heard Dr. Rosario Picardo speak on waiting.  He said, “The season of waiting doesn’t mean inactivity but being persistent in following God.” As he explained, “if we are willing to wait for God in an active state, knowing that God is doing his best work on our behalf, something supernatural will happen. Just wait.”

God does His best work in our waiting.

Jokingly, he said “how do you grow a 8lb baby boy into a 6 foot man?  You wait.” That resonated with me, because I have my own 8 pound baby boy, that somehow had grown into a 6 foot man. How did it happen? God did it. Like seeds planted in the soil of life, we patiently wait.

As we wait, God is growing us. Often, we don’t even notice.

James 1:4 says,  So let it grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.”

Today, whatever it is you are waiting on, whether it is medical results, a new job, a new relationship, a new move or a new birth, may you embrace this season, understanding God is with you.

God is growing you in the waiting.

God is working on our behalf. Trust Him. For me, this was a change in perspective, a shift really.

Here are some things you can do while you wait:

  • PRAY.  Philippians 4:6 ,from the Message says, “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers.”
  • Read Scripture. “For the word of God is alive and active.”  Meditate on it, asking God to speak to you through scripture.
  • Focus on God, instead of focusing on your situation.  Turn on some praise music and sing to God because you know God is working on your behalf. Dance around, the crazier the better. I’m serious. It will definitely distract your mind.  Romans 8:28 says, “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”  Ephesians 3:20 tells us, “God is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine.”

I am reminded of one of my favorite praise songs, “Yes and Amen.” I have dropped the YouTube video below. I hope you will listen to it. God is faithful. In fact, God is so much more faithful to us than we are to Him. Even still, all of God’s promises for us are in fact “YES: and “AMEN.” Even if we have to wait for them. -M

Let us pray;

Dear Lord, thank you for patiently waiting on us. Thank you for continuing to teach us and growing us while we wait. Thank you that You are faithful and you love us so much. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
