“The Word is alive.” Really?

Have you ever heard the phrase, “the Word is alive?” What exactly does that mean?

If you have been around the church for any length of time, you have probably heard this particular phrase. Maybe you struggle with understanding the idea. I know I did.

For a long time, I had no interest in reading the Bible. But one day, years ago, I joined a bible study and things began to change for me. Each week, we had scriptures to look up, read and reflect on. I did my homework although I found it boring and irrelevant.

A few weeks later, I began struggling with something at work. Irritated by the situation, I remembered a scripture from that week’s lesson. I went to my Bible and looked it up. The words seemed to be highlighted. As I re-read them, they jumped out me. With new understanding, insight and clarity, a strange comfort washed over me, resting within me.

Hebrews 4:12 says,

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

“Alive and Active”

When I think of something being alive and active, I think of the living and the breathing. I think of creation. My study note for the Hebrews verse says, “God’s truth has been revealed by Jesus (the incarnate Word), but it has also been given verbally, the word referred to here. This dynamic word of God is active in accomplishing God’s purposes.”

When you read the Bible, the Word of God comes alive in you. By reading and studying the scriptures, God can and will accomplish His purposes in you and through you. It is quite incredible if you think about it. I can not tell you how many times I have experienced God through His Word. It is imperative that we read our Bibles. This is where we learn who Jesus is and where we meet God.

John 1:1-5 says,

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

And verse 14 reads;

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

The Word become flesh.

The Word of God really is alive. It manifested itself in the incarnation of Jesus. It then duplicates itself in us as we read and believe what it says.

What I realize now is that the Word of God is alive, living and breathing. Jesus can be found in the pages. Jesus lives in the Word because He is the Word. He always has been. When we read the words, we ingest them. We take them in. They become a part of us. Jesus is living and breathing in us and through us. God is amazing!

Jesus says, I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].”

Jesus came that we might have life. Just like prayer connects us to God, reading your Bible does too. As you read, you not only find God, the Word comes alive and gives you life. God gives you exactly what you need for whatever situation you are in. It is mysterious and glorious and wonderful!

Like any relationship, the more time you give it, the better it will be. Spending time in the Word, will connect you with God and lead you into a deeper relationship with Him. Praise be to God!

Let us pray;

Father God, thank you for giving us Your Word. Place in us a burning desire to know you more through the pages of your Word. Make your Word come alive in our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
