What is your super power? I promise you have one.

Did you know that God has given us all a super power?  As a kid, I loved watching Superman and Wonder Woman.  I dreamed of having my own superpowers and one day saving the world. I have some gifts from God. I am an encourager. You may be an encourager too. I’m also a connector. I see people’s gifts and how they can work together for the greater good. And, I hear from God. You’ve probably picked up on that gift through my blogs. These are all gifts but not my super power.

Thursday, I’ll be giving a talk in Greensboro. As I prepared for it, God began showing me our super powers through scripture. 1 Thessalonians 5:11-19 says, Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. ..Live in peace with each other…,encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone…., always strive to do what is good for each other. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. And do not quench the Spirit.

There’s a lot of good stuff in this passage and it wraps up with the powers God has given us. Those powers are prayer and the Holy Spirit. Both are powerful on their own. But, when you infuse your prayers with the power of the Holy Spirit, you get some kind of mega super power. God does in fact heal the sick, make the lame to walk again, give sight to the blind and set the captive free.  We get to choose whether we participate in that work. We can be an instrument for God.  It’s not us though, but the power of God in us.  It’s not the prayer but the power of the Holy Spirit through the prayer.  Then, in that moment, all things are possible.

So the next time, you find yourself feeling a little down and out, tired and weary, burdened and heavy laden, don’t forget God has equipped us with some pretty awesome super powers. Our scripture reminds us, “rejoice always, pray continually and don’t quench the Spirit.” Be anxious about nothing but with prayer and thanksgiving, present your requests to the Lord.” Then watch and see what God will do for you. Trust me, God can do immeasurably more than we can think or imagine. God loves us so much. And God has equipped us to tackle any task that has been set before us.

Verse 13 says, “encourage the disheartened and help the weak.” The best way to encourage someone is to pray for them. Better yet, pray with them. Have you ever been in a bad way and someone stepped up and asked to pray with you? Did things change after that prayer? I’d say they probably did. We can do that for each other. We can pray for each other. We can use the powers that God has given us for HIS glory. We can make a difference in someone else’s life just by caring enough to pray with them. Let me encourage you to find someone to pray with today. I don’t think you’ll have to look very far.

Dear Lord, thank you that your Word reminds us to encourage one another. Thank you that you have given us the power to pray.  And thank you most of all that you left us  with the Holy Spirit. May we never quench its power. Continue to teach us how to pray in the power of the Holy Spirit and be your instruments for change in the world. In Jesus Name, Amen. -M

ps – if you know someone that could benefit from this blog, feel free to forward it to them and ask them to subscribe. I love hearing from you, so leave me a comment below and let me know that you did in fact pray with someone today. I’m excited to hear how it turned out. I promise they won’t be the only one encouraged. -M
